Homework guidelines:

Rationale for Homework

Homework in our school helps pupils to:

  • Consolidate what they have learned during the day
  • Develop independence in learning
  • Establish positive study habits after school
  • Extend their learning (especially in senior classes) through individual or group projects

Homework provides an opportunity for parents/guardians to:

  • Become actively involved in their child’s learning
  • Gain greater awareness of their child’s progress

Homework provides class teachers with an opportunity to:

  • Assess pupils’ understanding of classwork
  • Assess levels of independence in learning
  • Extend learning (particularly in senior classes)

Key Guidelines for Parents

  • Environment: Provide a quiet, well-lit space, free from TV, phones, and other distractions.
  • Routine: Establish a consistent time for homework, allowing for breaks and play.
  • Supervision: Check the homework diary daily, ensure all work is done, and sign it.
  • Support: Encourage independence; help solve problems but don't do the work for them.
  • Communication: Contact the teacher if your child consistently struggles with homework.
  • Reading: Make reading (with or to your child) a regular, enjoyable part of the routine.

Homework Expectations

Homework is usually assigned Monday to Thursday (not at weekends).

Parents/guardians are required to sign their child’s  homework journal each  night.

If a child cannot complete homework (e.g. family reasons or difficulty), please  inform the class teacher of same

Guideline Times for Homework

  • Junior & Senior Infants: 10-20 minutes
  • 1st & 2nd Classes: 20–30 minutes
  •  3rd & 4th Classes: 30–40 minutes
  • 5th & 6th Classes: 40–60 minutes

(Teachers may vary these guidelines from time to time.)

Advice for Parents

  • Useful guidance is available in   Tips for Parents   (National Educational Psychological Service – NEPS).
  • Spellings, tables, and oral work should be learned thoroughly and checked by a parent/guardian.

    • Pencil/pen
    • Sharpener and Eraser
    • Colouring pencils / crayons.

Morning & Afterschool Club:

Morning & Afterschool care is provided on site by The Country Kids Creche run by Mary Cuddy. This fabulous facility opens at 8:00am each morning and runs after school until 6:00pm. The children are supervised until school opens at 9.05am and again after school from 2pm until closing time.

This facilty provides a warm, relaxed environment for children to have fun with classmates and friends from other classes. Younger and older children play together, adding to the sense of community that already exists in St. Bride’s NS.

Children engage in a range of stimulating activities of their choosing, including unstructured play, sports and art. From 3pm, a supervised quiet space is provided for children who wish to do their homework.

For more details on the morning and after school club please contact Mary Cuddy at 086 2028771.

Parents association:

The Parents Association (PA) at St Bride's National School plays an important role in strengthening the school community by assisting with school events, fundraising and encouraging active parent involvement. The PA collaborates with the principal and Board of Management by contributing to the review process of important school policies and offering a valuable parent perspective. The PA also proposes and helps organise additional activities for the children - such as Wellness Days - and arranges gifts for milestone events like Communion and 6th Class graduations. The group serves as a supportive resource for parents to bring their ideas to the principal, helping to build a positive, connected and engaged school community. The PA extends beyond its committee and welcomes the continued support of all parents.

The 2025-2026 Parents Association committee is as follows:

Chairperson: Shona Murphy, Vice Chairperson: Ashling Kelly

Secretary: Karen Conama, Vice Secretary: Sinead Padian

Treasurer: Natasha Smyth-Kearney, Vice Treasurer: Linda Treacy
