Here at St. Bride’s National School, we believe that learning doesn’t just happen inside the classroom — we use the local environment and the outdoors as part of our pupils’ education and wellbeing. We utilise our school grounds and local environment for nature walks, Science experiments, History and Maths trails and outdoor lessons across many subjects. Pupils enjoy outdoor investigations in subjects like Maths and Geography eg. measuring, mapping, maths trails and Maths Eyes.
Pupils learn about plants, insects, and local wildlife through collaboration with the Tidy Towns and we learn all about the history of out village and castle from local historians and archaeologists from America each year . We also go on a walk in the village annually and visit all the local landmarks such as the church, graveyard, Hussey’s Forge, The Old School house , the castle, St Bride’s well , Columba Daly’s Shop and Kenny’s old shop etc.

Active Learning: Outdoor learning often links with P.E., movement breaks, and wellbeing activities to keep bodies and minds healthy. Our ‘Daily Mile’ provides us with a great opportunity to walk and talk.
Environmental Awareness: We encourage pupils to respect and care for the environment, helping them to understand the importance of sustainability and looking after our planet. We work in collaboration with the Tidy Towns Committee to keep our beautiful village looking its best and some of our students are involved in the Junior Tidy Towns. In 2026 we intend to work towards our 8th Green Flag ; Global Citizenship – Marine Environment.
Welcome to the Active School Flag (ASF) section of our website. The Active School Flag is awarded to schools who strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community. One of its aims is to raise awareness, in the whole school community, of the need for physical activity in a healthy lifestyle. The school has, to date, achieved two Active Flags and currently has plans to apply for a third.
Our Active Flag motto is – “Fed up with all that sitting down, Get up and earn that Active Crown”

The Amber Flag Initiative is a whole-school wellbeing programme run by the Irish charity Pieta House.
The initiative encourages schools to focus on and promote positive mental health and wellbeing across the whole school community.
It supports pupils in learning about wellbeing, resilience and healthy relationships with themselves and others.
At St. Bride’s N.S., we aim to begin working towards the Amber Flag Initiative in 2026. Watch this space for further updates!
